The South African brings extensive MLS experience, having served with the New York Red Bulls from 2017 to 2021 as both an assistant and interim manager. He later led St. Louis City SC, guiding the expansion team to the playoffs during their inaugural 2023 season.
Carnell’s playing career included notable stints with VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Hansa Rostock. On the international stage, he earned 42 caps for South Africa’s Bafana Bafana between 1997 and 2010.
The first match I saw St. Louis was a Leagues Cup match against one of the bigger Liga MX clubs. St. Louis came out with their press and the Mexican side just cut them to pieces, had the lead at the half. Second half starts, no adjustments, keep pressing, and the rout gets worse.
